It was hard not to notice something was up when I was running on the Riverfront Trail in Clifton.

Part of a tree was hanging over half the trail which is not normal. I know we've had some wind lately, but upon closer inspection, it appeared the tree had been cut with a saw. The break was too clean to be mother nature and there appeared to be a decent gathering of sawdust on the ground. Great deduction, Sherlock.

Did someone purposely come on to the trail to do damage? Would somebody do that? Is that what this is? Or did the tree need to be thinned down and was purposely cut to be hauled away later? That certainly is possible but it seems odd that if it was planned,  the clipped tree would be taken out right away.

What I know to be true is that the Grand Valley is extremely fortunate to have the Riverfront Trail. It is a tremendous recreational resource utilized regularly by walkers, bikers, joggers, and pet owners. I would like to think that everyone using the trail across the valley is doing their part to take care of it. That means not leaving trash, cleaning up doggie doo, and not inflicting damage to the flora along the trail.

For the most part I believe the people enjoying the trail are taking care of it. Unfortunately, there will always be a select few who would rather not comply. I am hoping we will find out that this mysterious broken tree turns out to be something other than random vandalism.
