Nobody is going to mistake western Colorado for Yellowstone, but, we do have our own geyser and it is the only one in the entire state.

The Geyser Spring Trail will lead you to this solitary geyser of bubbling water. A beautiful mile and a half hike will take you over a bridge, through the forest, and ultimately to the geyser. The elevation gain is only about 500, though the hike is described as moderate to difficult.

While this video shows someone in the pool, it's noted they didn't see the sign prohibiting swimming or bathing in the water until they were leaving. The signs warn of carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide gasses, which could cause "loss of consciousness" and "potentially death."

Make no mistake about it, I've been to Yellowstone National Park, one of the coolest places in the world, and this is no Yellowstone. The Geyser Springs does its thing every 30 to 40 minutes when the pool "erupts" and boils for about 12 to 15 minutes.

Still, the Geyser Spring in the San Juan National Forest, between Telluride and Durango is pretty cool to see, and the bonus is the great hike. With about a 4-hour drive from Grand Junction, it will definitely be a full day. But, you'll be able to say you've seen Colorado's only geyser.
