Colorado Police Warn: New Scam Calls Claim Fake “Family Emergency”
The Windsor Police Department are reminding residents to be mindful when it comes to phone calls and potential phone scams.
A Windsor resident recently got scammed out of thousands of dollars due to a convincing family-related “fake emergency” scam.
Windsor police went to Facebook saying: "First, know that scammers will try to trick you into thinking a loved one is in danger but when in doubt, it’s okay to check it out."
Asking for proof that the caller's phone number is legitimate and confirming with other family members help keep you from getting scammed. Police want you to know it's OK to ask for this information.
They continue on in the post stating: "Also, it’s not okay for any entity to ask for immediate payment, particularly as cash, gift card, overnight money order, or as check."
If you did get scammed and ended up sending money to a family emergency scammer, contact the company you used for the wire transfer service, bank, gift card company, or cash reload card company, etc.
Tell the company about the fraudulent transaction and ask for the transaction reversed.
