Smoking Age Raised to 21 in Colorado City
While you have to be 21 to buy alcohol or products containing THC, in the majority of the state you only have to be 18 to buy nicotine products such as cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and chewing tobacco. However, one city will be changing that over the weekend.
And of course, it's Boulder.
The city of Boulder voted to raise the age to buy nicotine to 21, a law that will go into effect on Sunday, November 17th. While cigarette use is reportedly down, the progressive city feels that it needs to lead the way in an attempt to curb tobacco use by teens.
It's also been reported that Fort Collins is looking to follow suit.
I remember being a teenager when Boulder outlawed smoking in public and having lived in Fort Collins for about two years, I can attest that they are serious about the smoking ban downtown.
Now, naturally, there will be debates about this. There's always the argument that an 18-year-old can be sent off to war in the military and carry a firearm, but can't drink a beer, will cigarettes be next? Also, there's the argument that if a teenager wants to get a hold of a pack of cigarettes, they're going to.
It's no secret these days that cigarettes are very harmful for you, and pretty much any way you get nicotine can be dangerous. Cigarette and cigar smoke is full of harmful chemicals, chewing tobacco is known to cause mouth cancer, and most recently people have been getting sick or even passing away from vaping.
Plus, as I mentioned earlier, cigarette use is down. Like, a lot. Is changing the age that a person can buy cigarettes, vapes, or other forms of nicotine going to change any of that? I guess we'll have to check on Boulder and find out.
