Selena Gomez Was ‘Really Messed Up’ After Being Body-Shamed for Gaining Weight
Selena Gomez opened up about being body-shamed during her battle with lupus.
The "Lose You to Love Me" singer, who announced her lupus diagnosis in October 2015, has been sharing details about her personal life like never before — and now she recently discussed how it felt to experience her health issues in the public eye and be "attacked" online following her weight gain.
In a new interview on her BFF Raquelle Stevens' video podcast, Giving Back Generation, Gomez said the negative comments she received about her body on social media "really messed me up for a bit."
“I have lupus and deal with kidney issues and high blood pressure, so I deal with a lot of health issues, and for me that’s when I really started noticing more of the body image stuff,” she explained, clarifying that there are "combination" of things that affect her weight, including the medication she has to take for the rest of her life.
"[My weight fluctuation] depends on even the month, to be honest, so for me, I really noticed when people started attacking me for that. And in reality, that’s just my truth. I fluctuate. It depends what’s happening in my life," she said. "That got to me big time. That really messed me up for a bit."
The criticism eventually led her to take a social media break, as well as taught her to stay in the present moment.
"I'm very happy with living my life and being present," the 27-year-old pop star said. "I will do a red carpet, I will do whatever; I don't need to see it; I participated; I felt wonderful and that's where the extent of it is. I don't care to expose myself to everyone and hear what they have to say."
