A former four-legged member of the Grand Junction Police Department is facing a serious health crisis.

The police K-9, Joker, retired from the GJPD after serving the community for 7 years. Now, Joker is in a fight for his life.

According to the Colorado Police Canine Association, the German Shepherd had a seizure Friday night that lasted 45 minutes and suffered five seizures the next day. Over the weekend he was diagnosed with a brain tumor about the size of a walnut and has been given medication to get the seizures under control.

The neurologist says the tumor is actually in the best place possible for surgery or radiation The surgery could be done in Grand Junction and the radiation in Fort Collins and the association will determine what the best course of action is to take.

Anyone who has dealt with serious pet health issues can appreciate how heartbreaking this is for the Grand Junction Police Department and anyone who has been associated with Joker over the years. We love our animals like family, and Joker was a big part of the GJPD family.

We are hoping for the best possible outcome for Joker and we are extremely grateful for the time he served the Grand Junction community-fighting crime and getting drugs off the streets.
