DMT is a psychedelic drug, which allegedly gives you a psychedelic experience faster than other psychedelics like LSD or magic mushrooms. DMT is a main component of ayahuasca. Although DMT is illegal and a Schedule 1 substance in the United States, ayahuasca plants are not illegal.

According to the Denver Post:

This is a drug that occurs naturally in plants and is one of the active constituents in ayahuasca. Amazonian healers for hundreds of hears have prized ayahuasca plants and use them for spiritual awakening.

It appears that ayahuasca is legal for religious purposes in the United States.
