After schools across the country were forced to close early due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and all Colorado school sports were canceled, the Montrose County School District is planning on resuming sports training Monday, June 22nd.

While this is exciting news for student-athletes, coaches and fans, there will be some precautions and restrictions put into place. For example, current Colorado rules state that no more than 50 people may be indoors at once. However, because of the size of the Montrose School District and the number of students in programs such as weight training, this shouldn't be an issue.

Also, the Montrose County School District recently held a meeting to discuss the means in which to test students for COVID-19 to ensure the virus doesn't spread among other students and coaches.

After such a strange few months, it's nice to see things finally beginning to get back to normal. However, some of these restrictions leave questions to be asked with regard to school sports. For example, if the 50 person limit stays in effect as sports return, will fans be forced to watch the events virtually?

In addition, will social distancing guidelines be put into place at school sporting events, limiting capacity? This question brings the newly reopened Mesa Theater's status to mind, as right now the 840 capacity venue is only allowing 150 people in for concerts.

Regardless, this is certainly a step in the right direction, and hopefully, if we can continue to keep COVID-19 numbers low and take the proper precautions, student-athletes across Western Colorado will once again be able to play sports.
