West Nile Virus has been detected within Mosquitoes in Mesa County. According to KREX-TV and the Grand River Mosquitoes Control District.

In a statement from the Grand River Mosquitoes Control District

West Nile virus has been identified in the Grand Valley and West Nile Virus mosquito populations (Culex) are on the rise.  Peak transmission season for West Nile Virus falls between the second week in July and the third week in August.  We urge all area residents to take the necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites by wearing appropriate clothing, using repellant with DEET, and avoiding mosquito populations when possible.  Please remove standing water from your property or report standing water to the Grand River Mosquito Control District.

To protect yourself and your family, take extra precautions when you are out. Wear insect repellents, long sleeves, long pants, and be sure to not let water pool in areas around your home. You can also put an extra level of protection by checking the screens and windows on your home to ensure that there are no holes or gaps.

People who become infected with the West Nile virus can have many different types of symptoms such as a fever, headache, body aches and fatigue. It can almost feel as if you have a really bad cold or the flu. If West Nile goes untreated, meningitis and encephalitis can occur. If you have any of these types of symptoms, please contact your doctor or medical professional.
