A man is in custody after spraying bear mace at Greeley Police, leading them on a chase and then shooting at the officers.

According to the Greeley Police, on Saturday (July 11) at 2:49 a.m. officers responded to the 1700 black of 10th street for a report of a male with a handgun at an apartment complex. Once officers found the suspect, he began to lead the police on a foot chase. When officers made chase, the suspect sprayed bear mace at the officers giving him enough time to make it back to his vehicle.

Greeley Police made chase, and when they did the suspect began shooting at officers, striking one of the vehicles. The pursuit led officers to i25 where the suspect exited the freeway at Crossroads BLVD. The suspect's vehicle became disabled at the Clydesdale Parkway roundabout. The suspect ran on foot toward the Embassy Suites Hotel where he was taken into custody.

The suspect, James Nicholson was arrested and charged with Criminal Attempt First Degree Murder on a Police Officer, First Degree Assault on an Officer, and two counts of Second Degree Assault on a Police officer. He also caught an additional charge for Possession of a weapon by the previous offender.

Nicholson was also wanted on an active felony warrant for controlled substance activity in Colorado.
