Grand Junction’s Oldest Houses and Buildings Still Standing Strong
We've been scrolling through the app a few times so far this year to show you some pretty neat photos of big changes that have taken place in Grand Junction, Colorado.
While we love seeing new buildings go up and new businesses move in, we love remembering all that went into the many structures that date back to the early days of our town.
How Old is the Oldest Building in Grand Junction, Colorado?
We're not going to even try to name a single oldest building in town. Instead, we will stand by a group of buildings we will call the 'original six'. Did you know that Grand Junction is home to six buildings that are all at least 120 years old and still standing?
Which Buildings Represent the Oldest in Grand Junction, Colorado?
The six structures that date back to 1890 include the Gear Junction building at 436 Main Street, the old Benges Shoes building at 514 Main Street, the Bistro Italiano building at 400 Main Street, the Main Street Bagels location at 559 Main Street, and the Rockslide building at 409 Main Street, and the St. Regis building at 359 Colorado Avenue.

- Building: Rockslide Restaurant
- History: This building was home to a bank in 1890. Sampliner’s Mens Store, Rush-Sanford, and Brownson’s have all called this location home. The building was renovated before Rockslide moved in.

- Building: Main Street Bagels
- History: This location has been home to the Mandel Opera House, the Mesa County Courthouse, L. Cook Sporting Goods, and Capps Furniture.

- History: This building was home to Mesa Drug which first opened in 1918. Reports from local experts say one of the first City Market locations opened behind this building in the 1920s.

- Building: Benges Shoes
- History: Benges is the oldest continuously operating business in Grand Junction and one of the oldest in Colorado. Benges Shoes announced its closing in November of 2020.
