Back to school brings back some great memories of our school years - including that memorable first year. Most of us have particular memories from kindergarten - including some tall tales we were told - that we still might believe.

My memories of Kindergarten are Mrs. Fallert, our student teacher, Miss Arneson, reading about Dick, Jane, and Spot; nap time on a green and white plastic mat; cinnamon graham crackers and milk; and getting knocked on the head with a pencil by Mrs. Fallert.

It's funny the things you remember 45 years later. (But, yet, I can't remember where I laid my car keys yesterday when I got home from work.)

  1. Cavemen Lived in Caves - Archeologists actually believe caveman lived outside of caves.
  2. Sitting Too Close to the TV Will Damage Your Eyes - We've all heard that one, whether it was at school or from our parents. That myth was actually born out of the 1960s when General Electric put out televisions that emitted radiation 100,000 times what was considered safe by experts. Those TVs were recalled.
  3. We Only Have Five Senses - Most researchers agree we have 10 or 11 senses, while some say we have as many as 21, including sense of balance, sense of heat and cold, perception of time, hunger, thirst, and joint position.
  4. Bats Are Totally Blind - Bats often live in caves where it's dark - so they MUST be blind, right? Wrong! According to Smithsonian they actually see very well -- but they are color blind.
  5. Swallowed Gum Will Take Years to Digest - Gum actually moves through your digestive tract just like other food, and can take 30 minutes to 2 hours to digest.

Here's more of the myths we have been taught from a very early age.
