Get ready for the annual City Of Grand Junction Leaf Pick-up

New this year they will provide four pick-up dates in each neighborhood!

City residents should have received a notice in the mail letting them know that leaf pick-up will run from October 15th through December 20th, along with a map showing the City divided into 5 areas, with the pick-up dates for each.

The City decided to change it from a weekly pick-up to allow crews to more effectively manage the work with leeway for inclement weather and equipment breakdowns.

To ensure your leaves are removed you must rake them into the gutters in front of your home by 7a on your pick-up day. Remember they will not be running Veteran's Day 11/12, Thanksgiving Day 11/22 or the day after 11/23.

For more information call the leaf removal hotline at 970-256-4111.

I always wondered why the City provided this service and according to the article it's an important part of the storm water management plan, because when leaves aren't picked up they end up in the storm drain system which flows directly to the river. The decomposing material can actually introduce excessive phosphorus in to the water, which can result in algae blooms and decreased oxygen for fish!

Instead they compost them and sell it to the public through the Mesa County Landfill Organic Material Compost Facility.

If you'd rather bag your leaves you can drop them off at the City Municipal Service Center at 333 West Avenue, on Saturday 11/17 & 12/15 from 9a to 1p.
