Grand Junction area schools in District 51 begin classes on Wednesday (August 10) and drivers should be aware there will be students riding buses, on bicycles, and walking to get to class.

That also means school zones and bus stops will be active and motorists should be aware that speed limits in school zones will be strictly enforced to ensure the safety of students. School zone violations are not only dangerous to students but could also result in a hefty fine.

With the summer break, it's easy to forget about all those things, especially if you're not one of those people who have students attending school.

The Grand Junction Police Department wants to remind motorists to slow down, make eye contact, expect the unexpected, and think about what you would do if they were your children.

We would also like to thank everyone who donated school supplies for the Stuff the Bus Campaign. This ensures students whose families don't have the means to purchase all the school supplies their children need will be able to get those supplies and give their kids a positive start to a new school year.
