Colorado Supreme Court Puts The Icing On Discrimination
A ruling by the Colorado State Supreme Court echoed around the world yesterday over a bakery who refused to make a cake for a same-sex couple.
The ACLU is reporting that the highest court in Colorado put the icing on the cake by setting the ruling that nobody regardless of what their lifestyle is should be refused service. Especially if the business serves the public as a whole.
This ruling came about after a 2012 court case. Masterpiece Cakes had refused to make a cake for a same-sex couple, stating that it violated their religious beliefs. The ACLU stated that
Colorado’s Anti-Discrimination Act prohibits businesses, such as Masterpiece Cakeshop, from refusing service based on factors including race, sex, national origin, or sexual orientation.
After many court hearings, the courts ruled that the cake shop had discriminated against the couple. The State of Colorado has shown the world that everyone has a value and that everyone has the right to be happy. For many, this ruling was very bittersweet.
