Chipeta Elementary School is closed today and tomorrow (March 28-29) due to mercury exposure. The elementary school is currently being tested to see when it will reopen.

Mesa County Valley School District 51's Facebook states that the testing is being done by Grande River Environmental Services per the Colorado Department of Health & Environment. Chipeta Elementary School will be tested for mercury vapor.

The results will determine when the school will reopen, which D51 hopes will be on Monday. D51's Facebook also states to seek medical attention if your child has these symptoms:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Skin irritation
  • Cough

According to a link provided by D51:

Mercury vapors are readily absorbed when inhaled and mercury is rapidly distributed through the body, including the central nervous system and the placenta.

Hopefully, the school will be clear of mercury and students can return to class soon. You can see the full statement from School District 51 here.
