Do you see the peak of the roof hiding behind the snow? That's the roof to the Grand Mesa Visitor Center. Check out all the snow!

This last weekend, a morning drive up the Grand Mesa seemed to be in order. A camera, cup of coffee, and full tank of gas, and you're good to go.

There's been talk going around about all the snow on the Mesa this season. I'm here to tell you, those rumors are true. I was born in Grand Junction, and looking back on the last 48 years, don't recall ever seeing snow like this.

My journey took me as far as the Visitor Center. I like to visit the center at least once per year. To my memory, it's never looked like this. Actually, I couldn't tell you what the Visitor Center looks like right now. It's buried under snow. A small path will get you to the front door, but that's about it.

Kudos to those responsible for plowing and maintaining these roads. Some of the equipment was parked at the Visitor Center. Those are some remarkable machines. I can't imagine driving one of these up the Mesa on fresh snow.

Along the way, you'll spot road signs buried under the snow. Some barely peek out, while others are completely hidden. One or two met their maker, presumably after being scrunched by a plow.

Strangely, or at least to my mind, there is no trace of snow from the bottom of the mountain until roughly the town of Mesa. From there, you'll spot only patches of snow here and there. Once you reach Powderhorn, it's snow as far as the eye can see.

Personally, I really enjoy this. As you know, snow at the top can linger for some time. The photo above was taken yesterday (March 18, 2019) in front of the Visitor Center. The photo below was taken at the same spot in May 2017.

Make a point to see the Grand Mesa while the snow is still deep. The roads are completely clear and easily driven. Any reliable automobile will get you to the top. It was only a year ago Colorado ski resorts were closing early for the season due to the lack of snow. Take this chance to enjoy our plentiful snow.
