The Baby Cage: Extreme Tanning Bed for Babies

A window mounted playpen for babies would never pass today's strict standards for safety, but in the 1930s high-rise dwelling infants really had a view.

The Baby Cage, designed by Emma Read in 1922 was designed to give families who lived in city tenement buildings without terraces or gardens, the opportunity to get their infants some sunshine and fresh air.

It's sometimes referred to as a baby balcony and when properly mounted, was considered quite safe for babies and small toddlers. While briefly popular in London, the idea never really caught on in the US.
