The Mesa County Sheriff's Office advises you to be on the lookout for yet another phone scam making its way around the valley. This scam utilizes a familiar contest to bait its victims.

As it happens, a deputy was on the receiving end of this scam via his department issued cell phone. The scam breaks down like this:

The caller, who identifies himself as John Ross, calls claiming to be  a driver for a national delivery company. This guy then claims to have your prize from Publishers Clearing House. The caller then tells you to contact one Robert Archer at another number and provide him with your award number. Following that call, you are then supposed to call John Ross back to arrange for delivery of your "prize."

Rest assured, Ed McMahon will not be showing up at your front door with a huge check. First off, this is a scam and has nothing to do with Publishers Clearing House, and secondly, he's dead.

The Mesa County Sheriff's Office reminds you, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Do not give out your personal information over the phone.

If you feel you've been contacted by these individuals, or any other phone scams for that matter, contact the Sheriff's Office via the non-emergency number at 242-6707.
