What Is a ‘Work Martyr’ and Are You One? [POLL]
Hey, you -- yeah, you with your head buried in your inbox, analyzing spreadsheets and toggling among your two dozen open windows. You may want to slow down.
You know who we're talking about. We're talking about those people on the job who seemingly work 'round the clock and maybe even skip vacation to verify their standing with the company and impress the boss. These people, ladies and gentlemen, are known as "work martyrs."
Simply put, "Work martyrs are characterized as workers who find it too difficult to take a vacation because of pressure to solidify their position at work, believe only they can do their job, or feel guilty for taking time off."
Yeah, they don't think of Sunday as a weekend day. They think of it as pre-Monday and a chance to sit in front of a computer for eight hours instead of going outside and interacting with real human beings in a social environment in an attempt to recharge the proverbial battery.
A new study found that 39% of employees want to be viewed as a work martyr by their superior, although 86% think having their family see them as a work martyr is a negative.
An astounding 43% of work martyrs are millennials and this demogrpahic is also most likely to shame other people for taking a vacation.
