We are so fortunate to have the Colorado National Monument here in Western Colorado but even as beautiful as it is sometimes accidents happen which is exactly what took place this morning as one woman lost her life.
According to KKCO, the Colorado National Monument has confirmed that a 58-year-old woman lost her life this morning near the west hill in the monument. Her identity has not to be released and will be done by the Mesa County Coroner after her family has been notified.
The accident took place early this morning at approximately 6:45 a.m. and after investigating it looks like the woman was riding her bicycle and unfortunately hit some small rocks that were in the roadway, she then lost control of her bike while going down the west hill.
As soon as 911 was notified there was law enforcement from the National Park Service, the Fruita Police Department, and Colorado State Patrol all rushed to the scene of the accident.
Throughout the investigation, law enforcement needed to close Rim Rock Drive but the road was reopened around 10:15 a.m. this morning.
At this point, these are all the details that have been released by law enforcement but as mentioned above the coroner will release the woman's identity soon.
Please remember to be very careful when visiting and recreating in the Colorado National Monument it's easy to forget how dangerous it can be when you're enjoying how beautiful it is. Obviously, this is a very tough time for the family of the victim and we are wishing them only the best as they get through this tragic event.
