It's That Time of Year in Western Colorado

According to a post on the Friends of the Mustangs official Facebook page from Tuesday, March 29, 2022, "We know it's spring because the stallions are facing-off repeatedly over mares, and of course, foals are being born. Two FOM members, the BLM range manager and visitors to the range were lucky enough to witness a birth of our 1st 2022 foal last Friday. It is a beautiful colt; the dam is Pixie and the sire is Snoopy Jr."

Let's Get Our Wild West Verbiage Straight

According to Wikipedia, the term colt "only describes young male horses and is not to be confused with foal, which is a horse of either sex less than one year of age."

What Will He Look Like When He's Fully Grown?

The Facebook post from Friends of the Mustangs adds, "We'll have to wait until summer when he sheds his 'foal coat' to see if he is black or a blue roan."

Okay, so here's the part where I show how ignorant I am about horses. I was born and raised in Western Colorado, but have spent very little time around horses.

According to horseracingsense.com, "Blue roan horses have a color pattern with a relatively even mixture of black and white hair that creates a blue appearance. Their head and lower legs are typically darker and have little or no white. Blue roan horses are present in many equine breeds."

Welcome to Western Colorado

I just posted yesterday about the horses spotted about midway up the east trail leading to Mt. Garfield. This colt was born a few miles east of that location. In my mind, the Bookcliffs make for some rugged territory. While that may be the case, it's probably safe to say this young colt will be just fine.
