Women make up just over 9 percent of the nation's construction workers, and upwards of 45 percent of those women work in sales or in an office, according to CNBC.com.

But construction is a growing industry. Construction jobs are expected to jump 12 percent between 2016 and 2026, the article states. Nationally 200,000 new positions in construction- related industries are available each year, and many entry level positions can start at $15 an hour, providing workers an opportunity to earn as they learn without college debt, according to United Companies.

"As the industry continues to face a worker shortage, many state legislators and professional organizations are doing all they can to bring more women into an industry packed with diverse opportunities and the potential to earn strong wages," the CNBC article states.

United Companies, one of Western Colorado's most prominent construction and materials supply companies, is joining the effort to encourage women to consider careers in construction. They are hosting a Women in Construction Career Day on Oct. 19 at 2273 River Road, Grand Junction, CO 81505.
