Two people are dead after a crash around 3:30 a.m. this morning on I-70 in Rifle. Officials are unsure why the vehicle rolled in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70.

An SUV was driving west when it rolled into the eastbound lanes of I-70, according to Sgt. Rob Madden. The accident happened near mile marker 91, which is in close proximity to Rifle.

There were multiple people in the vehicle when it rolled, Madden could not confirm the number. Colorado State Patrol isn't sure why the SUV rolled.

Several people were taken to the hospital and two people were confirmed dead on the scene of the tragic accident. An investigation is underway.
