Authorities in Steamboat Springs are searching for the culprit responsible for chopping down this beloved tree. Who would do such a thing?

We're not talking about a tree somewhere out in the middle of the woods. This 30-year-old decorative pine at Little Toots Park was cut down sometime before the morning of Christmas Eve.

Needless to say, cutting down a tree in the middle of a public park is illegal. It's also a crummy thing to do. This tree offered shade near a playground.

There are two things that need to happen right away:

  • The culprit needs to come forward and take responsibility for this crime
  • The city of Steamboat Springs should seriously consider changing the name of the park.

According to Mike Lane, Steamboat Springs police are on the case, but have no suspects at this time. If you are the responsible party, please come forward. While there are penalties you'll have to face, they aren't severe. Potential consequences include:

  1. Misdemeanor charge
  2. Possible fines
  3. I'm going to write really nasty things about you on the bathroom wall at the Maverick station

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Steamboat Springs Police Department at 970-879-1144.

What can be done to remedy this situation? A GoFundMe page has been established. To contribute, check out the Little Toots Tree Fund.
