Steamboat Ends Season With Crashes, Splashes, and a Legend’s Birthday
If you ski or snowboard, you know spring snow conditions are less than ideal for either. While not good for skiing, Steamboat found mid-April conditions perfect for zany activities like pond skimming, cardboard box racing, and more.
Enthusiastic skiers and snowboarders get spring fever just like everyone else. They just exhibit all the craziness in a different way. Like taking cardboard boxes and building contraptions for the Cardboard Classic.
Some say spring snow conditions make snow skiing seem more like water skiing. That couldn't be any truer than on Steamboat's closing day where the Splashdown Pond Skim proves snow and water skiing aren't the same.
Heading into the weekend on Friday, the resort celebrated Olympic gold, silver, and bronze medalist Billy Kidd's 75th birthday. Billy has made Steamboat his home since 1970 and has earned 'legend' status among residents and visitors to Steamboat Springs.
