Steamboat Company Planning World-Record Firework Attempt in February
The 107th annual Winter Carnival in Steamboat is sure to create a bang this year, as a local company attempts to break the world record for the largest single-shell firework ever launched.
Tim Borden, of Steamboat Fireworks, has been working on a design for this record-breaking attempt for nearly six years, but this is only his second try at it after a failed launch last year. Borden has also been helping to put on Steamboat's 4th of July fireworks display for the past 20 years.
The 62-inch aerial firework with a 2,500 pound shell will be detonated during the evening of Saturday, February 8 from Howelsen Hill. The firework will shoot out of a 26-foot deep hole in the ground. Officials from the Guinness World Records will be there to determine if the record is broken. If you can't make it there to watch in person, Steamboat Fireworks will also be streaming the display live on their Facebook page.
The current world record for the largest single shell is 2,397 pounds. This one was launched in the United Arab Emirates in 2018.
