While most women in Hollywood are often pressured to uphold the entertainment industry's unrealistic beauty standards by shrinking down to a size 0 and staying there, comedian Rebel Wilson found the opposite to be true. Gaining weight, she says, helped further her career.

Wilson recounted a story about writing her first play during a recent interview with The Telegraph. She said she’d casted a heavier actress to perform alongside her, but noticed her co-star was eliciting more laughter from the audience than she was, and she wasn't sure why that was the case.

“I was like: ‘Oh. That girl’s getting a lot of laughs, a lot easier than me. What is it?’ Because I don’t think there’s much difference in talent,” she said. "And I remember distinctly thinking: ‘I think it’s because she’s fatter.' And then, I don’t know if it was mega-conscious, but I thought: ‘How can I get more laughs? Maybe if I was a bit fatter…’ And then suddenly I was fatter, and doing comedy.”

When asked whether she's ever thought about altering her appearance, Wilson admitted she feels pressured to maintain her current weight.

“Oh yeah! I’ll take six months off, and just do a total transformation," she said. "But then, so many people go: ‘Don’t you do it!’ But I think: ‘Why not?’”

“I saw my size as being an advantage,” she continued, “whereas so many women see it as a disadvantage."
