One of the most in-depth studies (so far) of clergy sex abuse in Colorado recently concluded an eight-month investigation.

A new report released by Colorado's Attorney General's Office details how, in the last 70 years, 166 children in Colorado have been abused by 43 priests.

According to this latest study, over 80 of the children were abused after the dioceses knew that these priests were abusers.

The 263-page report also states that it took nearly 20 years for any restrictions to be placed on the accused priests after an accusation of sexual abuse had been reported.

On one hand, investigators could not find that any abuse had happened after 1998; on the other, there's no real way of knowing if it's still occurring because the record-keeping at these dioceses is 'flawed and incomplete.'

There are three Catholic dioceses in Colorado: Denver, Colorado Springs, and Pueblo.

According to the Reporter-Herald, the Archbishop for Denver put out an 8-minute video and a four-page letter in response to the report, apologizing to those who have been abused, and praising their courage in coming forward.

The lead investigator in the study, a former U.S. Attorney, stated:

The accurate conclusion [of this report] is that this threat to children will continue unless the flaws we identify in the Colorado Dioceses’ policies, practices, and systems intended to protect children are fixed and the recommendations in this Report are implemented.
