Officer Involved Shooting In Clifton, One Person Seriously Injured

An officer-involved shooting Sunday in Clifton left one person seriously injured.

Clifton area residents may have noticed a large police presence Sunday afternoon near 32 and E Road. No less than 15 police vehicles were on the scene of an officer-involved shooting.

What Happened

Just before 11:00 am Sunday, there was a report of a suspicious vehicle on the I-70 Business Loop speeding and swerving.  Eyewitness reports indicate a couple appeared to be arguing inside the vehicle.

A short time later, a vehicle matching the reported description was located in the 400 block of Coronado Way, just off of 32 Road and E Road. An eyewitness said they observed a female, who appeared to be in distress, being dragged into an apartment by a male subject.

According to the Grand Junction Police Department, deputies unsuccessfully attempted to make contact with the occupants of the apartment.  Officers then forced their way into the residence where they found a juvenile who was safely removed from the scene.

Details of what happened next aren't clear, but ultimately a shot was fired by a police officer. A male suspect was shot and wounded and transported to the hospital where he was being treated for serious injuries. An adult female was also injured, but it appeared her injuries were sustained prior to police involvement. Authorities say one deputy received minor injuries during the incident.

No Arrests So Far As the Investigation Continues

At this point, there has not been an arrest or charges filed and the investigation into the incident is on-going. As of 7:00pm Sunday, several officers were still on the scene in Clifton. Authorities are requesting anyone with information or video of the incident to contact on-emergency dispatch at 970-242-6707.

The Critical Incident Response Team will be conducting interviews of eyewitnesses over the next several days and additional details will be released at the appropriate time. As is agency policy, deputies in officer-involved shooting cases are placed on administrative leave while an investigation is conducted.
