Do you have an old guitar or violin lying around? There is a school somewhere in Colorado that could really use them. Here's how you can give that old musical instrument a new life.

Right now, Bringing Music to Life is hosting its 2020 Instrument Drive. The event is running through March 15, 2020. At this same time, schools can apply to receive instruments.

We welcome donations of band and orchestra instruments, including strings, brass, woodwinds, percussion and guitars. With the exception of upright pianos and organs, we accept all instruments in good condition. - Bringing Music to Life

Does this really work? Do Colorado schools actually get instruments for their school music programs? Absolutely. Here's a list of Grand Junction area school which have received instruments in the past via this program:

  • Bookcliff Middle School
  • Gateway School
  • Grand Mesa Middle School
  • East Middle School
  • Juniper Ridge Community School

If I sit and think about it, somewhere around my house I have an old student-level violin and an entry-level acoustic guitar. To be perfectly upfront, I was giving serious thought to turning the old violin into a decoration for my home. Now that I've heard about this program, there's no doubt in my mind it would be better utilized by a local school. Hey, this violin got me started on my music career. Who knows which aspiring musician might be next.

Okay, so where would a Western Colorado resident drop off a donation of a musical instrument? Good news, you won't have to travel far. Donations are accepted at the Grand Junction Symphony Office at 414 Main Street in Grand Junction. Again, the drive is going on through March 15.

It would really mean something to me to see that old violin inspiring someone else to pursue music. That old guitar certainly isn't doing my closet any good. What a great opportunity to give back. Please look around your home. Chances are you might have just the instrument this wonderful organization is in need of.
