A newborn baby was dropped off at a fire station in Lakewood, Colo. after the baby was handed to a couple in a Walmart parking lot.

A middle-aged woman in Lakewood who was in a Walmart parking lot, gave her baby to a passing couple. The couple then took the baby to the Lakewood Fire Station, which is a "safe place" location.

When the baby girl was dropped off, it was still covered in amniotic fluids, but healthy. Police are still searching for the mother who they believe may be in medical distress.

The Safe Haven Law provides an affirmative defense against prosecution if a parent relinquishes a baby, unharmed, at a hospital or fire station within 72 hours after birth.

Authorities say that this was not a Safe Haven relinquishment because there is no way to prove who the child's mother is, which could be punishable by up to 26 years in prison under the same law.
