I swear to you, I had no idea these events existed. School District 51 offers get-togethers with school counselors, all over a friendly cup of coffee. Recently, the district added a few more dates.

What exactly happens at these gatherings? According to the Mesa County Valley School District 51 webpage:

The goal of the event is to build relationships and answer questions about mental health and counseling.” - Shauna Hobbs, District 51 Coordinator of School Counselors.

According to the district's webpage, the event is intended to help people understand how school counselors play a critical role in supporting students. Counseling services are not provided during the event,

The two newly added dates include:

  • Wednesday, March 25 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Fruita Starbucks
  • Wednesday, April 29 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the North Avenue Starbucks

How long has this event been around? Coffee with a Counselor began in the 2019-20 school year as a way to help people understand how school counselors play a critical role in supporting students.

The community response at the Clifton Starbucks has been so welcoming that we want to include opportunities across the Valley,” Shauna Hobbs, District 51 Coordinator of School Counselors.

Okay, let's talk about the coffee for a moment. Attendees get a free sample of their favorite Starbucks beverage to sip while talking with a counselor.

These events sound awesome. Why not attend? Personally, looking back on my academic career, the only time parents ever met with school counselors was when somebody got in trouble. This proactive approach seems much better. Make plans to participate.
