M.I.A Introduces New Song, Two Videos In Eye-Popping ‘Scroll 01′ Clip
M.I.A. has shared two new songs from her fifth studio album, Matahdatah — and there's a dazzling, multi-location video to go with it, directed by the singer-rapper herself.
The clip's full title is Matahdatah Scroll 01 ‘Broader Than A Border. It's an Apple Music exclusive, so if you're not a member by now and you need new M.I.A. in your life, you should probably sign up for their free 3-month-trial. If you are a fan, you'll want to hear her new track, "Swords," immediately.
“My new song ‘Swords’ was filmed in a Temple in India and we recorded the clang of the metal to make the beat at the same time as shooting these incredible girls,” M.I.A. said in a press release. The visual is worth watching for these young sword-wielders alone. They're amazing.
The swordplay is intercut with footage of the girls doing normal young-person stuff: chatting, laughing, doing each other's hair, whipping swords around on a rooftop, and lying on the ground without flinching as someone hacks a vegetable in half as it rests on their throat. These girls seem like they practice (like, A LOT) and you definitely shouldn't try this at home.
M.I.A gets to swingin' herself, whirling fire around in front of a temple. It's a complimentary visual companion to the single, which was produced by Spanker in collaboration with Ms. Arulpragasam, and just the first in a series of Matahdatah visuals. Each of ten installments will be filmed in a different country and feature new songs from the upcoming release.
"The concept for this LP is ”broader then a border" and MATAHDATAH is the journal of MATANGI," says M.I.A. "Sometimes I move vertical and sometimes I move horizontal.” And sometimes she moves a rope in a circle, with fire attached to it.
"Warriors" appeared on M.I.A.'s previous release, 2013's Matangi, but she didn't drop a video until now — and it's a cohesive match with "Swords" both sonically and visually.
M.I.A. explains, "Warriors’ was shot in Cote d'Ivoire with a guy I saw in a youtube video doing the most incredible dancing. I tracked down that exact guy, flew out there and played him the ‘Warriors’ track. He did his thing for me. He is a spiritual warrior and communicates through dancing. It's a lifelong commitment for him to be the designated spiritual body that channels that dance.”
