Mesa County Residents Get GED Costs Covered With Prep Classes

Are you a Mesa County resident looking to get your GED? You can have the cost of the GED exam covered if you successfully complete this course with Mesa County Libraries.

Enrollment is now open for fall General Education Development prep classes beginning August 12, 2019. Mesa County Libraries offer GED prep classes in all four subject areas of the exam:

• Math
• Social Studies
• Science
• Reasoning through Language Arts

The GED prep program is offered through the library at no charge to Mesa County residents. Students will responsible for fees associated with the GED subject exams at the end of instruction. The GED exam usually runs in the neighborhood of $150.

In an effort to reduce the financial barriers to getting a GED, the library is now offering to cover the cost of the GED exam for students who qualify. Why? It seems some avoid taking the exam due to the cost.

According to James Price, head of Literacy Services for Mesa County Libraries, “We have seen a number of potential students avoid the GED because of the cost of the exam.”“ Price adds, "By covering the cost of the exam for qualified students, we hope to remove a financial barrier to getting a GED.”

Who's eligible to receive this offer? Mesa County Libraries GED students who:

• remain in good standing by regularly attending prep classes
• taking the required assessments
• successfully completing the GED Ready Practice Test

The program covering the cost of qualified students’ GED exams is funded through a  grant of $5,000 from United Way of Mesa County.
