Each year, the Mesa County Landfill has a free day where residents can dump their household trash at no charge. This year, you can pick your own free day to dump a load of trash.

The program, put into place this year, is designed to do several things. One, it will reduce the amount of traffic that typically overwhelms the landfill and transfer stations by having everyone dumping trash show up the same day.

Two, if the landfill or transfer station has to close on that day due to wind or other safety concerns, people can come back another day and still not have to pay. Three, and one of the best, people can bring their trash to the landfill when they're ready, whether that's sometime this spring or later on this year.

The Mesa County Landfill takes typical household trash but cannot accept tires, electronics, paint and other hazardous waste. In addition to those items, the transfer stations cannot accept construction debris so that will have to be taken directly to the landfill.

Hazardous items can be dropped off at the Hazardous Waste Collection Facility which is adjacent to the landfill. Tires are accepted but there is a fee. Recyclable items should be left at the Recycling Center at the landfill and not dumped with other trash.

The Mesa County Compost Facility is also on-site and accepts organic materials that are used to make compost which residents can purchase. That service is always free so separating your household trash from tree limbs, grass clippings and the like means less trash in the ever growing dump.

To be eligible for the free day, you need a pass which gives each address in the county one free load that can be used anytime during 2018. To get a pass, just head to the landfill office and give some simple information that proves you are a Mesa County resident.

That information should include photo identification plus a vehicle registration or other document like your electric bill. If not used that day, the free pass can be used within two weeks of the issue date.
