After a planned blast was detonated, a massive rockfall came down covering CO-119 with massive boulders shutting down the highway for at least 24 hours.

The blast was part of a construction project to move the highway onto more of the bedrock for more stability during high waters.

CDOT told 9News that normal blasts bring down 4,000 cubic yards of rock. This blast brought down nearly 8,000 cubic yards. Rocks this size cannot be moved, so CDOT will need to do more blasting to clear the debris.

CDOT also mentioned there was another area of rocks the loosened, which could potentially fall onto the road. This area of rock will need to be blasted out before the road opens.

CDOT will have crews working through the night, but there's not a timeframe as to when the road will open.
