For over thirty years, Lovelanders and visitors to town have enjoyed the holiday lights that get put up on the south side of Lake Loveland, and in downtown at Foote Lagoon. Those lights won't be up for 2022, and the future of them seems, questionable.

Things are going to look different in Loveland this holiday season without these lights that have been going up for years, not being there. It's a tradition that may be falling by the wayside; can it be saved? Will other Loveland traditions also go away?

Growing up as a kid in Loveland, I remember my folks taking the family to the park south of Lake Loveland (the park now known as Dwayne Webster Veterans Park) in the summer, for brass bands and popcorn. That tradition faded away, and it looks like another, a more visible one, is going to be a part of Loveland's history if things continue as they are.

I'd heard that these lights, put up by the Winter Holiday Council, weren't going to be happening this year, and figured it was about money. The organization has had their share of financial troubles, as well as finding storage for all the decorations and lights, but it's not about those things, this time.

The Reporter-Herald reports that the Winter Holiday Council won't be putting up their lights/decorations this year, due to a lack of volunteers. According the council, they've been trying for many years to get more people onto the council, but there are still more than a dozen volunteers short to make things happen in 2022. They will be putting up the Namaqua Star, however.

I find it sad, and a little hard to believe, that Loveland can't find enough volunteers to keep this project going. Nobody is saying that it's an easy endeavor, but, there are a lot of projects that require work around town, that do succeed. Maybe enough people just haven't heard about the need, yet. Here's to hoping that the council gets those volunteers to that the 2023 Christmas season will see the lights return.
