Last Year Americans Lost $63 Million – In Pennies

A penny won't buy anything nowadays, but a lot of pennies will.

According to the Lucky Penny Guy, Americans lost $63 million in pennies last year and $20 million of it ended up in local landfills. He also says the U.S. Treasury estimates over $108 billion dollars in pennies are inside American households.

So, what's the big deal about pennies? Put a bunch of pennies together and they would go a long way toward funding someting like Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. According to the  Mayo Clinic, CRPS is a form of chronic pain, "out of proportion to the severity of the initial injury."

On National Lucky Penny Day, you are invited to bring your pennies to a special event and donate them to help fund CRPS research.

From 11am until 3pm on May 23, there will be a car show and BBQ at Timberline Bank in Grand Junction, 633 24 Road. It's a free event and all you need to do is bring your pennies.

You should also keep your eyes open for one of 5000 lucky pennies (like those picture above) that have been placed across the country for people to find. These are shiny pennies, but the fact is they aren't worth any more than that old, beat up, dingy-looking penny you might find between the seats of your car or under the cushions of your couch.
