Lady Gaga to Record Amy Winehouse Classic for Late Singer’s Foundation
A little more than five years after the death of Amy Winehouse, Lady Gaga is among those aiming to keep the "Valerie" singer's legacy alive, and for a good cause.
Gaga, Leona Lewis and more stars will record covers of favorite Winehouse songs to raise money for The Amy Winehouse Foundation, which was established two months after the singer's death in 2011, The Sun confirmed. The charity aims to empower and heal young people through music therapy and education, and Winehouse's father, Mitch, told the outlet Gaga embodies the organization's mission.
"I love Lady Gaga. I know she's bit kooky but I've met her mum and dad, they're a lovely hard working family, from New York," he said. "She's like Amy, when she comes home from work she puts the tracksuit on, watches TV and kisses and cuddles her grand- parents. Lovely kid."
Mitch added that the celeb covers will be uploaded to a new YouTube channel, and that Amy's foundation will make money each time a tribute's view-count passes the two-million mark.
In an August 2011 interview at The View, which was broadcast just one week after Winehouse died, Gaga described the distress she experienced after hearing the news. She also lamented the media's instinct to make an example out of Winehouse, who famously struggled with addiction.
"I'm just so devastated and so sad and I really couldn't speak for, like, 48 hours straight I was just in such shock," Gaga said. "I don't feel that Amy needed to learn any lessons. I feel that the lesson was for the world to be kinder to the superstar. Everyone was so hard on her, and everything I knew about her was that she was the most lovely and nice and kind woman."
