It seems like forever ago that the original Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl was an unexpected Hollywood hit, a questionable adaptation of a popular carnival ride that somehow managed to be one of the best action movies of the year. In the original film, Johnny Depp surprised us all with his mimicry and knack for physical comedy, even bringing home an Academy Award nomination for his performance as Captain Jack Sparrow. Fast forward a few years, however, and the franchise seems to have devolved into what we originally feared: a hollow cash grab from Disney that has quite clearly overstayed its welcome.

To right the ship  —  pun quite clearly intended  —  Disney seems ready to pull out all the stops. Earlier this year, it was announced that Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales would be bringing back Orlando Bloom and Geoffrey Rush to reprise their roles. Now another big name has rejoined the cast: according to TooFab (via Hollywood Heroic), Keira Knightley will be returning for the fifth film in the franchise, albeit in a smaller role. According to the site’s sources, while her role only consists of a “small cameo during the end credits,” it does point to an expanded turn in a possible sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film.

A sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film? Listen. Maybe we didn’t ask for a fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Heck, maybe we didn’t even ask for a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie. But since these movies keep making ungodly amounts of money at the international box office  —  Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides alone grossed over a billion dollars at the global box office  —  we might as well get used to the idea that, bad reviews or not, the franchise isn’t going anywhere until one movie bombs completely. So rejoice, all you Captain Jack Sparrow fans, because you’re going to get exactly what you right up to (and probably past) the moment that you don’t want it anymore.

Here’s the full plot synopsis for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales:

Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar, escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea… including him. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.

The fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie will sail into theaters on July 7, 2017.
