A major merger is taking place that will not only affect grocery stores across Colorado but may even see stores that have been in the Centennial State for decades replaced by the Piggly Wiggly brand.

What is Happening to these Colorado Grocery Stores?

According to a report released last year, Albertsons and Kroger branded grocery stores will be merging and this change will likely affect numerous stores across Colorado.

The merger will see over 400 stores turned over to C&S Wholesale Grocers across the nation, a company that owns Piggly Wiggly stores.

If the sale takes place as planned, 52 grocery stores owned by Albertsons will likely be affected and include such names as City Market, King Soopers, Safeway, and two stores in Colorado that carry the Albertsons name.

Currently, the majority of Piggly Wiggly stores that are operating across the United States are located in Wisconsin, with additional locations in places like Mississippi, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Texas.

In addition to Piggly Wiggly stores estimated to begin popping up in Colorado, it's also expected that a number of stores owned by Kroger and Albertsons will simply be shut down and close their doors for good.

If the deal is implemented as planned, it should be finalized by Wednesday, January 17, 2024, and at this time the future of Colorado's many grocery stores owned by Kroger and Albertsons will likely become much more clear.

However, the United States Government could deny permission for the companies to merge which would see Colorado keeping its City Market, Safeway, and King Soopers stores unaffected.
