The Best And Worst Cities For Biking In Colorado
For a majority of people in Colorado, we get around the same way almost everyone else does in the country; by car.
Sometimes, that can feel a bit perilous here. In fact, we were rated as the 4th worst state in the entire country for road rage.
However, there’s still plenty of other ways to get around here in Colorado.
Quite possibly one of the most popular alternatives to driving is taking public transportation. Interestingly, Colorado actually ranks 11th in the country for public transportation use.
You could also just walk, with places like Denver being a rather walkable place. However, the most walkable town in all of Colorado is actually Telluride.
However, easily one of the most popular forms of transportation amongst Coloradans is biking, and as a state, we have plenty of infrastructure to support it.
With that being said, it is worth looking at Colorado’s biggest cities, that being places with over 100,000 residents, to see which is the most, and least, bike friendly.
Boulder is Colorado’s Most Bike Friendly City
Each year, a program called People for Bikes, which is actually based out of Boulder, creates a City Ratings list that ranks cities and towns both in the United States and globally for their bike-ability.
They rate each place on a scale from 0-100, with the higher score meaning the easier it is to bike safely to common destinations.
When it comes to the most bike friendly city of over 100,000 people in all of Colorado, Boulder takes the cake with a score of 70.
That means it ranks 34th in the United States, and 96th in the entire world.
Pueblo is Colorado’s Least Bike Friendly City
While many people consider Colorado to be a rather bike friendly place, not all of the cities here can truly lay claim to that.
Take the lowest Colorado city in the ranking, Pueblo, for example.
It finished with a total score of 5, which places it at 2,269th in the United States and 2,548th in the world.
Clearly, its infrastructure was meant for cars.
What are the Most and Least Bike Friendly Towns in Colorado?
While it might seem redundant at a glance, if we take back the limitations of only looking at cities with over 100,000 people, we get to see the highs on both ends of the spectrum.
For one, what turns out to be Colorado’s most bike friendly town is Crested Butte, and it’s not even close.
It has a total score of 89, which is 12 more than Aspen in second place. It ranks 7th in the United States and 9th in the world.
Finally, the least bike friendly town in Colorado is Fort Morgan, which comes in with a measly score of 3.
That gives it a country rank of 2,291 and a world rank of 2,570.
