One of Colorado’s Biggest Gas Stations is Closing 1,000 Locations
While there’s many different ways to get around here in Colorado, like biking, walking, or taking public transportation, the vast majority of people still get around like much of the rest of the country; driving.
For many Coloradans, this can be an incredibly infuriating experience.
People have such bad road rage here that Colorado ranks as the 4th worst state in the country for aggressive drivers.
However, gas stations can offer a brief respite from the hustle and bustle of places like I-25.
There’s historic spots like Johnson’s Corner that were visited by Jack Kerouac, or you can try to grab a nice bite to eat.
With that being said, that doesn’t mean we haven’t had any gas station changes recently.
In fact, all of the Kum & Go locations in Colorado were just converted to Maveriks, which has plenty of fans upset.
However, one of the most popular gas station chains in the state could be in for a major shakeup soon.
Shell Set to Close 1,000 Gas Stations Nationwide
Shell is not only one of the largest gas companies in the entire state, but truly one of the giants of the industry worldwide.
The British company has 122 locations in Colorado alone, which gives it the seventh most gas stations out of any company in the entire state. There is a Shell gas station in 65 different cities.
However, they recently came out with a statement saying there would be some major changes coming on the horizon.
They announced that they will be shutting down almost 1,000 gas stations around the country between 2024 and 2025, which is a considerable amount.
However, whether or not any Colorado locations are being affected is still not known.
Why is Shell Closing Gas Stations?
For Shell, this is not a question of the profitability of these particular gas stations, but trying to catch on with a new industry trend.
They are looking to shift away from traditional gas pumps and are instead trying to install more public charging stations for electric vehicles.
In fact, they are looking to add 70,000 charging stations across the country by next year, and to have about 200,000 more by 2030.
In general, they see the profitability of oil going down within the next half decade both with the advent of electric vehicles and more fuel efficient cars hitting the market.
