New List Says This Colorado City Has the Best Pizza in the US

As it would turn out, Colorado is one of Guy Fieri’s favorite spots, having been to over 44 different restaurants in the state. 

On the other hand, you can visit a ton of restaurants that were started by contestants on the show Top Chef. 

However, a study done by listwithclever.com to find the best pizza cities in the country came up with a truly shocking ranking, crowning Denver, Colorado as the best pizza city in the entire country.

What About Denver Makes it the Best Pizza City in the United States? 

On the list done by Clever Real Estate, there were multiple criteria that were used to find the best pizza cities. 

For example, they looked at average Yelp review scores, prices of large cheese pizzas, and what they call the “pizza passion score”, which according to the study is a score “...based on the volume of local Google search activity of 34 pizza items.” 

On the Yelp review side of things, Denver’s pizza joints do relatively well. They have an average Yelp review score of 4.05 stars out of 5, well above the average of 3.89 stars. 

When it comes to the price of a large cheese pizza, Denver well outpaces the rest of the country all the way down at $16.79. The average is $19.34.

Finally, the pizza passion score is 82.1, which is well above the average of 71.8. In fact, what sets Denver apart from the rest of the country is that they are above the average score of each category, which is likely why they rank above all other states. 

Where Do Iconic Pizza Cities Rank, and Who Ranked as the Worst?

Now, Denver may top this list, but to be honest, it is by no means what many would call an iconic pizza town. 

The two cities that people usually point to as amazing havens for pizza are New York and Chicago. Both of these cities offer unique spins on pizza that is imitated across the country. 

Incredibly, New York is ranked as the fifteenth best pizza city. Fifteenth.

Sure, it may cost $28.60 to buy a full cheese pizza, but in many cases, you get what you’re paying for.

On the other hand, Chicago, the home of the deep dish, ranks fourteenth. A cheese pizza costs $27.66, which to be fair is expensive. 

In fact, a major problem with the rankings is that they do not take into account what makes each pizza town special, such as their local styles. 

To be fair, Colorado has its own unique spin on pizza, with Beau Jo’s thick crust style of pizza. 

On the other hand, the city that fared the worst on the list was Memphis, Tennessee. 

It has a low pizza passion score, at 53.1 points out of 100.
