New Law Allows For Tickets to Be Issued During Construction

Almost as soon as you get your driver's license, there are two places you figure out you really don't want to speed. First and foremost is a school zone, of course.

For the sake of children's safety first and foremost, but also because there's usually law enforcement hanging around keeping people under the speed limit, and you want to avoid a ticket that comes with a stiffer penalty.

The other is construction zones, for the same reasons. But now it won't even matter if law enforcement is lurking nearby, because in the State of Colorado, it's likely someone - or something - is watching anyway.

CDOT and the Colorado State Patrol have announced the installation of a few "speed calculation" cameras in a construction zone on Highway 119 between Boulder and Longmont.

These aren't your typical "photo radar" cameras that you might be used to seeing. These are "speed calculation" cameras, where two separate cameras are installed somewhere between a quarter and a half mile apart, and the two cameras work together to determine your rate of speed based on how long it takes you to get from point A to point B.

The Colorado Speed Enforcement Program seeks to limit speed related accidents and make construction zones safer for workers who are out there trying to fix our roads. This law was passed in 2023 but is only now taking effect, with CDOT and CSP giving us about a 30-day grace period to get used to it before citations are issued.

Any driver identified going more than 10 MPH over the posted speed limit will automatically be issued a citation by the new system.

While the first zone to be monitored - with cameras already installed - is The Diagonal between Boulder and Longmont, you can bet you'll be seeing this new technology along other construction zones in the state very soon.
