Beloved ‘Big Boy’ 4014 Locomotive Making 2 Northern Colorado Stops in Fall of 2025
It's a marvel of man-made engineering, and Coloradans have the chance to witness it up close, when Union Pacific's Big Boy 4014 steam locomotive makes two stops in Northern Colorado on September 30 and October 1, 2025.
How Much Does the Only Working Big Boy Locomotive Weigh?
The Big Boy locomotives were commissioned exclusively for Union Pacific Railroad in 1941 to help with the war effort. They made only 25 of them, and today only one is still in operations: Big Boy 4014 weighs, like they all did, 1.2 million pounds. There are seven others that remain, but only 4014 travels the country, after being rebuilt in 2019.

As children we all become at least a little fascinated with trains: they're big, strong, loud, and unique. Sometimes, our interest in trains takes on its own life and we begin a collection toy trains for our own personal display down in the basement. For others, just visiting the Colorado Model Railroad Museum in Greeley is enough.

Big Boy 4014 will be making two stops in Northern Colorado, as they drive it from Cheyenne to Denver and then back again, September 30 and October 1, 2025. With that trip, folks in the Fort Collins/Greeley area have two opportunities to turn out and see Big Boy for half-hour stops.
- September 30: Colorado Railroad Museum (10th Street Crossing in Greeley.)
- 12:45 p.m. - 1:15 p.m.
- October 1: Eaton - Collins Street Crossing.
- 12:30 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.
On those days, you can keep the kids occupied while they wait, by tracking where Big Boy 4014 is along the tracks with Union Pacific's Tracker.
