The First Aluminum ‘K-Cups’ Come to Colorado – Will You Be Using Them?
More than a few people in Colorado have a coffee maker at home that uses "K-Cups;" many of those Coloradans have been concerned about how many they through away. Here comes something that has "Colorado" written all over it.
Millions of K-Cups Get Thrown Into the Trash Every Day
It's almost hard to believe that over 40,000,000 K-Cup pods end up in landfills and oceans every day, but ever since their convenience came into our world, it's hard to let go; I, myself, have looked for ways to "have my cake and eat it too," when it comes to K-Cups. I think I'm up for giving these a try.
The ingenious little Keurig machines with their coffee pods, that have a coffee filter built in, began hitting kitchen counters in 1998. The name 'Keurig" comes from the Dutch word for "excellence."
Keurig Brought Us Plastic K-Cups, a Man From Keurig Set to Get Us Out
The former Chief Innovation Officer at Keurig left the company to start his own coffee company; but that company, Cambio Roasters, didn't start out to make aluminum cups. It wasn't until about six years into their existence that they set out to make recyclable K-Cups.
When I heard of them, I thought that maybe they made aluminum cups that you have to put ground coffee into; I've had a couple of those plastic ones before. On the contrary, they were about putting great coffee into cups, before the set out to change the cups themselves.
"Cambio" translates to "Change" in Spanish, which is appropriate for this coffee company. Not only are their cups 100% recyclable, but they donate 20% of profits to Food4Farmers.com, which is helping to end hunger for coffee farming communities.
Look for them at Kings Sooper/City Market stores across Colorado (about $12 for a 10-pack.) Let me know if you like the coffee - use our "chat" feature on the app.
