Where Does Colorado Rank For Auto Thefts in 2024?
Vehicle thefts in Colorado have been notorious in the past few years. So much, in fact, Colorado has been the worst state for vehicle thefts in the nation for the past two years. Recently, thefts of catalytic converters have plummeted in Colorado. Mainly Denver County.
New research shows that car crimes have been on the rise in the United States. How many vehicles have been stolen in the United States? Over one million in 2023 and Colorado was the leading state.

In the past five years, Colorado has seen an uptick in automotive thefts totaling an increase of 103 percent. According to MarketWatch, Colorado has dropped in the rankings of auto thefts, but not by much.
Colorado's auto theft ranking is now third, dropping from the number one spot. New York and Vermont have taken over as the top states for auto thefts in the United States. The state of Vermont leads the ranking with a 121 percent increase in the past five years. However, when you look at the numbers, Colorado is still the leader with 785.7 auto thefts per 100,000 residents.

Vermont's number of vehicle thefts per 100,000 people is tiny in comparison at 93.5. In 2022, the estimated value of Colorado's stolen vehicles was approximately $530 million, with an increase of over 500 percent from 2014. Couple this statistic with Colorado's notorious hail storms, and these two factors are probably the reason why auto insurance has skyrocketed in the state over the past few years.
