If you have ever been to a European country, you might have heard the familiar sound of police sirens. The first time I took a trip to Europe, I distinctly remember hearing the sound throughout certain parts of Rome. Mainly around the hospital. It's weird because every time I hear a siren like that, it takes me back to my first trip in Italy.

A New Type of Siren Will Be Heard In Colorado

Soon, one Colorado sheriff's office will be implementing the use of sirens that sound a lot like those that you would hear in European countries.

These distinct sirens do not sound like the typical wailing siren that you have become accustomed to hearing while police vehicles drive by. The new sirens won't be used in every event where sirens are needed, either.

Designed for Major Emergencies

The Hi-Lo Sirens will be used in patrol cars to assist with emergency evacuations, such as wildfires and floods. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office said in the video release on Facebook, "When you hear HI LO, it's time to go!"

The sirens are to be used specifically for dedicated life safety events where people's lives are actually in danger. The system is designed for worst-case scenarios, such as wildland fires, flash floods, major law enforcement incidents, and other critical events in which lives are at immediate risk.

What's Different About the Hi Lo Siren System?

When the Hi-Lo Siren is activated, it emits a distinctive high-low tone, followed by a recording stating that a mandatory evacuation order has been issued for this area. Please evacuate immediately. The siren and the message are intended to inform residents in the area that a threat is nearby and to take precautions.
